EMDR Therapy

Our brain, body, and nervous system don’t have a calendar.

You sit on your sofa enjoying the most talked about drama or action movie. You want to enjoy your snakes and your fun blanket. It is time to rest after this hard week, but suddenly, your heart starts racing, your hands are sweaty, and you can’t move.

What just happened? Everything felt so calm, and then, boom!

At some point, you return to the present and realize that the siren and the broken glass in the movie scene are not your car accident and that you are on your sofa at your home. But are you ok? No, not really.

How often have you been highjacked by your past trauma and painful experiences due to current noise, smell, sight, comments, etc.?

What just happened to me?

When something traumatic happens, it seems to get locked in the nervous system with the original picture, sounds, thoughts, feelings, etc.

Since the experience is locked inside, it continues to be triggered whenever a reminder comes up. When something triggers that experience, it can be the basis for many discomforts and sometimes negative emotions, such as fear and helplessness, that we cannot control. These are the emotions connected with the old experience triggered by a recent experience.

How does EMDR work? And for whom?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful clinical treatment shown to be effective for victims of traumatic experiences. EMDR has also proven effective in treating addictions, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.

The eye movements we use in EMDR therapy help unlock the nervous system and allow your brain to process the experience.

The experience is like what happens in REM or dream sleep. The bilateral stimulation in eye movements may help reprocess the unconscious material.

You are in control.

It is important to remember that your brain will do the healing, and you are the one in control.

There is no reason for you to live with those extreme charges of past experiences and traumas – that cause you to toss and turn at night and feel scared to fall asleep for fear of nightmares.

It’s time to stop being scared by certain people, relationships, places, and activities that bring up past negative experiences – causing you to become isolated, use substances, or other maladaptive behaviors to break from the noises in your mind. Suffering like this is unacceptable. You can heal!

EMDR is a proven scientific therapy.

Since 1987, EMDR therapy has received empirical support from numerous randomized controlled trials (RCTs). It is known internationally as an effective treatment for trauma and a wide range of experientially-based disorders.

EMDR is a proven scientific therapy that helps reduce the charges around traumatic events by helping your brain and nervous system separate what happened then and what’s happening now. Through EMDR, you will learn to see yourself more positively, allowing you to breathe when something feels unsafe and familiar in a negative way. With the support and trust gained from your therapeutic relationship, you can heal from negative experiences, traumas, and PTSD.

The purpose of EMDR is not to delete memories or flood the system. Our goal is to prepare you to work on what you choose and are capable of at any moment. You can finish the movie without getting flooded, frozen, and lost in your flashbacks. You deserve it.

Learning to live next to your past negative experiences and traumas and not melt in them is essential for your body, mind, and spirit, and it is possible.

Trauma is personal.

According to Dr. Francine Shapiro, the founder of EMDR therapy, “any event that has had a lasting negative effect on the self or psyche is by its nature traumatic.”

Remember, trauma is personal, and what is traumatic for you may not be for someone else. But we are here to take care of you.

Trauma is everything that happened to you and caused an imbalance in your system and can keep you frozen at that moment. EMDR can help you unfreeze, break free, and be in the now.
